Official
Opening
The
Haven Gallery on Macleay island
August
9, 2008
It
was not the first trip to Macleay Island by Melva Hobson, the new mayor of the
City of Redland, but it was definitely the most relaxing.
On the deck overlooking Moreton Bay, local art lovers gathered on a
brilliant sunny winter’s day to celebrate the official opening of Redland’s
newest art gallery, The Haven. During
her speech, the Mayor said that the Council was keen to encourage all forms of
the arts in Redland, and “The Haven Gallery” would be welcome addition on
Macleay Island, which already has an established and growing art community.
She also highlighted the history of the husband and wife team, Margaret
and Neville Prosser, who own the gallery. Their
background is in the sciences rather than in the arts, demonstrating how
creativity in one field can translate into creativity in the visual arts.
From his background as a professional photographer specializing in
industrial photography with CSIRO, Neville discovered his artistic skills and
put these to use when he opened the first Haven Gallery in the trendy tourist
precinct of Williamstown, Victoria, about 18 years ago. In
response to Mayor’s kind words, Neville spoke about the exhibition and how it
had been put together especially for the opening.
The exhibition was an introduction of Neville’s own works to his local
community in Queensland. On display
was a selection of pieces dating back over twenty years, plus a series of more
recent images of landscapes taken since moving to Queensland almost three years
ago. The images reflected the theme
of the opening “Contours, Colour and Contrast”. The
new Haven Gallery on Macleay Island will provide a relaxed venue for exhibitions
by local artists, as well as future exhibitions of Neville’s own work that
will focus on the natural environment of Moreton Bay and its surrounds.
He will also be offering his professional skills as a photographer and
picture framer to the local community, with competitive prices.
Neville
will also offer a range of digital services including scanning from flat copy,
colour slides, and negatives, restoration of old photographs,
and photo enlargements. As
qualified scientific/industrial photographer he also specializes in
photographing artwork, real estate, and insurance work.
Web-based services include producing images for ebay auctions or websites
and he can also manage your ebay auctions and assist with construction of
websites.
